Dark Sky and the Arts
Women in Dark Skies – Teddie Hwang – 21st March 7pm (ONLINE EVENT ONLY)
Part of Irish Astronomy Week
Teddie is a historical flutist and photographer based in Mainz, Germany. Ever since being introduced to astrophotography in 2020, she has been fascinated and inspired by the night sky. In this presentation, she will demonstrate how she combines the night sky experience and astrophotography with music, with artistic, pedagogical, spiritual, and environmental aims. She will talk about her multimedia projects and collaborations with church communities, as well as how she uses the wondrous dark sky as a key educational concept for gaining deeper insight into music. As a special bonus for our audience, she’ll be premiering a new film in this talk featuring night sky imagery from the dark sky reserves of the Rhön and Havelland in Germany!
Not only is this talk taking place during Irish Astronomy Week, March 21st is also known as the European Early Music Day amongst historical music performers. On the birthday of the great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, Teddie will touch on why she chose this date for her talk and the impacts that the night sky has had on her musical trajectory.
Besides performing, Teddie has held lectures at venues such as Indiana University(USA), the Galway Early Music Festival, the National Flute Association of America, amongst others. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Music and Germanic Studies from Indiana University, and received her master’s degree from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands. She is a member of the International Dark Sky Association.
